New researchers

Welcome to Oxford

This page provides useful information both before you take up post and during your first few months in Oxford.

Before you start

If you are about to take up post, the University's webpages for new starters will tell you what  you need to know about moving to Oxford and starting at the University.

When you first arrive

Welcome event for research staff

Three welcome events are held each year, giving you a chance to meet other new researchers from across the University, get information about career and professional development support, University services such as computing, library, and research support, and talk to representatives from a range of University services.

Please visit our seminar details for the date,s and to also book your place on a forthcoming welcome event.

As well as the University welcome event, your research group and/or department should offer you a programme of induction during your first few months in post – there may also be an induction by your division. The key people during this time will be the head of your research group, mentor, or supervisor and your departmental administrator. If in doubt about any aspect of your work, your department, or settling into Oxford, speak in the first instance with one of these people.

In your first few months

The University’s Code of Practice for the Employment and Career Development of Research Staff sets out the provisions and guidelines for the employment of research staff, and is an excellent guide to the services and resources available to support your work, and professional and career development. It includes a helpful checklist of questions for you to consider during your first three months as a member of research staff at Oxford.
