Institute overview

The core of the Institute's work is in the providing courses in staff development described elsewhere on this website. We also maintain a small lending library with texts in topics such as teaching and learning in higher education, and leadership and management; and we provide a number of on-line resources, including information on gender equality and on mentoring, for use by members of university and college staff. We support policy development by committees of Council, such as the Education and Personnel Committees, and we undertake a small amount of research aimed at supporting both our course and policy work. In addition, we advise the University in relation to national initiatives within our remit.

Over recent years, through the 'CETL' (Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning) based in the Institute, we have promoted the development of training across the University for early career researchers (research students and staff) to introduce them and prepare them for academic careers. These programmes are now embedded in the Divisions with continuing support and under-pinning research provided by the Institute. The Institute contributes in this way to the skills training effort of the Divisions to provide career development for both research students and staff.
