Support staff
The Institute actively supports the professional and personal development of all members of support staff. Whether you are in a clerical, secretarial, administrative, technical or ancillary role there is a wide range of support available to you. We also provide support to staff in supervisory or first line management roles.
There are a range of seminars, development programmes, online courses and resources available. Many of the seminars have been designed to meet the needs of support staff and they cover different topic areas and skills – some of them focus on improving communication and working relationships, some focus on developing skills in taking minutes in meetings, whereas others focus on learning how to manage your time better.
If you are new to the university, please have a look at our online induction course.
The new Managing Yourself programme is primarily aimed at members of support staff and those in supervisory or first line management roles. There are a number of exciting new seminars which will help to build on the skills you already have as well to develop some new ones. The focus of the programme is managing and developing yourself at work. As part of the programme, we have produced some online resources which can help you with writing for work purposes. The resources include some helpful hints and tips on how to write emails, proofread documents and some guidelines on spelling, grammar and punctuation.
The Springboard personal and professional development programme for women is highly recommended. Many women who complete the programme feel more confident at work and at home, have better relationships with their manager and other work colleagues and find meeting women from across the university, including other members of support staff really valuable.
We offer a course for members of staff whose first language is not English, called English for work. Please see our seminar and course listings for more details.
In collaboration with Ruskin College, we offer two courses, which may be of interest. The first is a numeracy course which covers numeracy skills for work and everyday life. The second is a writing course, called ‘Writing with confidence’ which covers punctuation, grammar and spelling and is open to anyone who has few or no formal qualifications and who has been resident in the UK for three years or more. Please see our seminar and course listings for more details.
The Institute has a number of books in our library, many of which are relevant for support staff and can be borrowed by anyone with a university or Bodleian card.
