Workshops for Principal Investigators and postdocs

This series of standalone workshops are run locally to enable PIs from Headington, the Science Area and central Oxford to make best use of their time and are aimed at those new to the role of leading a research group, or those on the verge of doing so:

So you want to be a PI?

This two-hour session is for postdocs who are considering becoming PIs. It looks at what it means to be a PI and the routes to becoming one. It explores the perspective of the funders and of departments, which are both critical in enabling the transition from postdoc to research independence.

Managing researchers: an introduction for postdocs

It is not unusual for postdocs to find themselves managing other researchers, either formally or informally. It is also rare that they have had any training in this crucial role. This half day workshop seeks to address this gap by exploring what it means to manage others, what makes a research group productive and what the role of the manager is at each stage of a researcher’s contract or career.

The new Principal Investigator: the challenges of managing research

The half-day workshop looks at the challenges of recruiting, motivating and managing a research team and of making the transition from researcher to research group leader. Drawing on research carried out by the Learning Institute with new PIs, this short course looks at what many PIs wish they had known during the early days and at the way to manage researchers at different stages of their contract or career.

Research group leadership: leading a productive research group

This one-day workshop looks at what makes a research group productive and the role of the research group leader in influencing these factors to get the most from their researchers. It explores what researchers want from their work, what you, as the research group leader needs from them, and how to mesh the two.
