This half-day session will provide an introduction to research administration at Oxford. It will begin with an introduction to research at Oxford and the external environment affecting and influencing research in the UK higher education sector. There will be an overview of research administration at Oxford across the research project lifecycle highlighting key units (and the linkages between them), procedures, systems and further training opportunities. The seminar will end with a sandwich lunch.

Format:
An interactive session with plenty of opportunities for questions and group discussion.  Speakers will include representatives from Research Services and Research Accounts, and a Departmental Administrator will give a departmental perspective on research administration.

Intended for staff starting having recently started (e.g. within the last 3-6 months) in a role involving research administration activities or who have responsibility for staff in such roles. This will include:

  • lead administrators, research and finance officers, and project managers in Departments
  • officers supporting research planning and activity in Divisional Offices
  • Research Facilitators and Coordinators in Divisional, Departmental and thematic roles
  • research administrators in UAS

This is an introductory session. Participants may also be interested in attending the sessions on supporting research grant applications, research contracts, financial management of research awards, and personnel administration on research awards.

Learning objectives/outcomes
Participants will gain an overview of:

  • the research funding environment in the international, national and Oxford context
  • the organisation of research administration at Oxford
  • applying for research funding and the financial management of research awards
  • research administration from a departmental perspective
  • resources and sources of support to assist them in their roles
