Description

Through discussions in mixed groups of supervisors we examine different ways to think about graduate education, consider a range of experiences of graduate supervision, and address how the supervisory relationship might change and develop over its lifetime. Resources available to support supervision at Oxford will be highlighted, along with some relevant matters from the educational literature.

Aim
To assist participants to clarify the range of issues and expectations encountered in the supervision of doctoral students at Oxford, and hence determine what strategies can be adopted to better manage the research supervision process.

Learning objective/outcomes
By the end of the seminar you should be able to:
• identify the expectations of DPhil supervisors at Oxford, and reflect on some ways to improve your practice and better support your students;
• apply a range of strategies to the management of the supervision process;
• appreciate further the student point of view of supervision and the benefits of clarifying expectations at every stage of a student’s career.

The Oxford Learning Institute has a part of its website dedicated to  where a wide range of issues in the supervision of doctoral students at Oxford is addressed. Each page offers Oxford information (e.g. policy, practice and statistics), Idea and tools and Insights from research and literature. Aimed primarily at both new and experienced supervisors and their needs, the site also offers much for other interested audiences (e.g. Directors of Graduate Studies, DPhil Students, College Advisors, Mentors, etc).
