Description

This course provides an introduction to the role of committee secretary. It will look at how and what to prepare in advance, how to record meetings effectively and efficiently, and how to construct clear and effective agendas and minutes. It will also explore how your minutes and agendas can be structured and used to help your committee to work efficiently and effectively. Although a variety of styles of agendas and minutes will be discussed, the main focus of the course will be on formal styles and formats.

Format: face-face
Intended for those who are new to or have limited experience of servicing committees, this course builds knowledge and practical skill though discussion in the group and in pairs, and provides practice with real-life situations.
Learning objectives/outcomes
By the end of this half day course, participants can expect:

  • To understand the role and responsibilities of a committee secretary
  • To construct a clear and effective agenda
  • To consider ways of taking notes at an appropriate level of detail
  • To write clear and appropriate minutes that accurately reflect the meeting
  • To be able to compose agendas, minutes and meeting papers using a range of approaches, including the University house style
