Course titleActing as an expert witness
Course codePER/OUC/AEW

Description

A free seminar from Oxford University Consulting exploring the advantages and potential pitfalls associated with acting as an expert witness to a court case.

In a landmark decision last year, the Supreme Court abolished the immunity from liability in negligence that expert witnesses had previously enjoyed under English law. This has potentially far reaching consequences for staff at the University who may be considering such work. This seminar has been designed specifically to help staff better understand the issues associated with expert witness work and to provide advice on how to avoid potential pitfalls.

This course is provided by Oxford University Consulting.

Aim
The seminar will be led by two experienced solicitors from Mills & Reeve’s commercial litigation team. Caroline Chivers and Robert Renfree will describe the role of the expert in the litigation process, the importance of knowing which forum you are working in and the duties of experts in English court proceedings. The seminar will highlight the potential liabilities of expert witnesses and advise on practical steps to minimise liability. Advice will also be given on how to avoid the pitfalls of giving oral evidence and how to prepare.

Outcomes:
By the end of the end of the 1.5 hour session, participants will:

  • have a clear understanding of the issues associated with undertaking expert witness work and practical advice on how to avoid potential pitfalls.
